A drone, or Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), is an aircraft that's remotely controlled or flies autonomously supported by a pre-defined flight route and/or dynamic automation systems. Remote inspection techniques are a further inspection alternative, which reduces safety risks to the Surveyor. Using UAVs allows the attending Surveyor to gauge the condition of a structure from a stationary location.

These technologies can deliver significant improvements in survey efficacy. while being less intrusive to the asset, decreasing asset operational downtime and operational expense also improving safety.

Companies that provide UAV services are often certified through the ABS Recognized External Specialist Program. The program certifies suppliers who perform UAV services for equipment manufacturers, shipyards, vessel owners, or other clients about classification.
